About the project

Projet Citoyen started life because of the realisation that young people (and adults!) across Europe know very little of the work and the importance of the European Parliament. With the help of a grant fromt he Parliament a group of Sixth Year students in East Dunbartonshire are going to do something about that.

With only 6 members of the European Parliament elected to represent the whole of Scotland, most people never meet an MEP. And the newspapers and other media don’t seem to cover European matters in much detail. However, the young people involved in this project are finding other ways to get information. They have started using the Internet to research various European themes, and are working in groups looking at a particular area of European policy. Some are looking at environmental issues, others at the euro, and some are even investigating policies on alcohol across the EU.

In addition to this research, the students will also visit Strasbourg, visit the Parliament, make contact with other young Europeans, and meet with MEPs and senior officers of the Parliament. During their visit they will further their research and learn how the European Parliament as the elected voice of the citizens of Europe develops policy.

To disseminate further what they have learned, the students are developing an interactive online quiz. Aimed at younger pupils in S1 or S2, the quiz will be entertaining and informative. Given that the final product will be web-based, hosted here on projetcitoyen.com, the quiz will be used in the schools of East Dunbartonshire and will also be disseminated on a wider basis. This will hopefully help students in Scotland and perhaps further afield to be more aware of Europe, the EU and the European Parliament, and feel like a European citizen as well as British and Scottish.
